The main function of the Public Works Department is to provide the required maintenance of all roads, sidewalks, sanitary sewers, water mains, lanes, parking lots, ditches, bridges, etc. In addition, the department is responsible for garbage collection and maintenance of sanitary landfills and recycling operations. Public Works also maintains all municipal vehicles and equipment.

Street Lighting
All street lighting concerns or inquiries are to be presented to the Public Works Department.
Street Winter Sanding
Winter sanding is provided on a daily basis, as well as on an emergency basis via the department on-call system. A daily sanding log is kept in the sanding unit, identifying road conditions, sectors and routes which have been sanded during a particular day.
Snow Removal and Snow Dumps
Snow removal operations are carried out in both commercial and residential areas on a priority roadway basis.
Storm Sewer Maintenance and Repairs
Public Works maintains and repairs storm sewers that collect rain run off from streets.
Water Distribution System Maintenance and Repairs
The Public Works Department also maintains and repairs water mains, hydrants, valves and water service connections to property lines.
Sidewalk Plowing, Sanding and Cleaning
In conjunction with roadway plowing and sanding, some sidewalks (mainly along major routes and school routes) are also plowed and sanded during the winter months by Public Works.
Street Sweeping
Each spring, streets are swept in order to remove winter sand buildup. Street sweeping and street washing are carried out in summer and fall by the Public Works Department as required.
Sidewalk and Curb Repairs
The Public Works Department undertakes a program of sidewalk and curb repairs each year based on the identified needs.
